Usually when a wealthy foreigner comes in to Hollywood, such as Sony and Columbia Studios or German film investors, they usually lose a lot of money. Hollywood is expert on separating investors from their money.
Netflix new strategy is partnering with local providers. This is safer, for the profits will be a lot less. I have a bit of this, since I have a lot of business books that I have not read yet. I find it much harder to read a business book, than a fun book. And I have some beautiful leather bound books, collections such as all of Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare, etc. from when we used to have a local Barnes & Noble, that I have never read. Books for me are more about reading and good content. I buy books new and used. And some of my books are falling apart from overuse. The headache is some of those are out of print...
FAQ CD & DVD's

Q. Should I buy DVD or CD's to Learn Chinese?

A. Yes - They are an excellent method and most of the CD's and DVD's

Q. Why are they on sale?

A. I want to focus the site on Learning Chinese Textbooks, so I have put all the CD's and DVD's on sale.

Q. Do you think DVD's or CD's are going obsolete?

A. Yes and no.

They are not selling for me. My textbook sales vs DVD's / CD's are 20 to 1 at least. So getting rid of inventory that does not sell makes sense for my business. Then I can simplify my website, and focus on what sells.

A. Personally no.

I
prefer having a CD or DVD. MP3's and video files moving them around are
a headache from device to device for those of us less technically advanced. At least with my current hardware and
software set up. And a lot of the content on the DVD's are not
available online at this time.

The
Video market seems to be moving to an all you can eat, with limited
selection, pricing model such as NetFlix. So DVD sales industry wide
have dropped dramatically. For teachers, I see DVD's as a great solution since the material is not available online, and this is specialized market. Yes, Youtube has some Learning Chinese Materials, but it's nice to be able to play a video without any advertisement. Plus, this way you don't need to worry about having a good Internet Connection.

One of the Learning Chinese Textbook Series I carry went to MP3 replacing a CD and I disagree with the decision. I wish they had kept the CD, and added the MP3 files. They are hosting them on their website, and websites are not always accessible. Plus it's not 100% clear where the actual files are located.

Same with the Chinese Reading Touch Pens, which went from CD to MP3 with no notice, so you have to download, that was a huge headache for me to figure out and caused some customer frustrations I did not appreciate. Plus downloading files from China is not super fast. CD has great usability and no downloading issues.

Q. Are they new?
A. Yes

Q. Are they guaranteed?
A. 100% - which means they will work when you receive them. This does not mean you open them all up, say you don't like them, and return them theoretically without copying them - I am sure nobody would do this... I have more in my return policy about CD and DVD returns. I changed the return policy after somebody bought a bunch of DVD's, opened them all up, and then returned them since they did not like them. All in the same series.

Q. What zone are they?
A. Most are zoneless, but you need to look at each product page. It should be there.

Q. What is a DVD zone?
A. The wonderful people at the big movie studios, made zoning for DVD's. That means a Disney DVD made in China in Chinese, will not play a standard US DVD Player. You can buy a zoneless DVD Player, which takes care of the issue. If I understand correctly, zoneless DVD players are not legal in the US, but they are available. Chinese and Korean electronic retailers carry them. This also applies to Blue Ray DVD's. On the back of DVD's there is a picture of a globe that has a number below it, that is the zone. US is Zone 1. Taiwan Zone 4. China 6. Often DVD's are more expensive in Europe, than they are in the US. Or DVD's are cheaper in China, than in the US. It's frustrating, since in the US it's a pain to get DVD's dubbed in a foreign language (Disney does an amazing job, there US Mulan DVD has Chinese on it).

Q. What language are the DVD's in?
A. Mandarin Chinese with English.

Q. Are there sub-titles?
A. It varies, please check each DVD.

Q. Can you play English sub-titles with Chinese
A. Depends on the DVD.

Q. What language are the CD's in?
A. Mandarin Chinese - check each CD. I have some CD's that are used to teach English.

Q. Do you have CD's or DVD's in Cantonese?
A. No. Back in the days of Cassette Tapes, I bought some Cassette Tapes with Books, and they were very slow to sell. I used to get lots of requests for Cantonese, so I was surprised at the lack of sales.

Q. Which accent of Mandarin?
A. It varies. Look where they are made. If made in China or Taiwan it will have their respective accent. Ones made in the US vary in the accent. I prefer the Taiwan accent over the Chinese, but I am married to a Taiwanese...

Chinese Touch Reading Pen

I have a limited quantity available of the Touch Reading Pens. I have gotten quite a few requests about them, but I was reluctant to sell till I was 100% sure it would be a positive experience for the customer and me.

The touch pens are fun to use. Basically you have a special book, and the pen then reads the text in Chinese. If there is not a CD provided, I will preload the pen with the needed software. The download from the publishers site is slow, so there will be a day or two delay in shipping touch pens while I test everything. A specially written English Manual is included with the touch pens that I wrote.
ePacket shipment from China on ebay.

Some observations:

Somehow for low weight items it seems cheaper to have an item shipped from China to the US, than ship an item within the US.

ePacket takes around 14 days to get to the US. It may take up to a month.

Basically Chinese sellers have taken over the market on eBay for new items of low weight mfg. in China.

Some Chinese sellers get a US address (person), and still ship from China.

For new girls dresses category, sellers from China now dominate it. This was not true a couple of years ago.

No idea how returns work for sellers? Shipping from US to China is expensive, probably $15 starting per 1 lb. $16.75 using 1st class. This probably explains why there are so many companies that ship to China, probably use a container.

Not sure how a US seller would compete with stuff from China on eBay, which seems to be about price, price, and price..

ePacket my guess is subsidized by Chinese government, so super cheap and probably below their cost.

USPS actually loses money, $1, on each item shipped from China via ePacket.

Calfornia Bilingual Education Deja Vu?

There is a proposition on the ballot, that wants to gut the Ballot Proposition that killed most bilingual education in California. I have mixed feelings about this. My understanding was once 227 went into effect, it had a huge negative impact on businesses selling bilingual materials. I have heard this from multiple book sellers. As an educator, it seemed that prior to 227 many students were stuck permanently in bilingual classes, and never learned English. The incentive for schools being to max out bilingual classes for additional funding. The end result from studies, is eliminating bilingual education did not seem to have a negative impact on student performance.

My 2 cents - What California needs is true bilingual education. What it has prior to 227 was not. The goal has to be to get students fluent in English ASAP, for this is a basic language they need for economic survival in the US, To go beyond the survival level, being bilingual is a great advantage to have. In Southern California Spanish is very helpful, but the rise of China, had made Learning Chinese a competitive advantage.
A+ - What I admire about this publisher, Better Chinese, is the high quality of their products.
Harry Potter in Chinese Textbooks?

Per the Beijing Daily, a series of books for 6 & 7th graders tested the use of Harry Potter. This was done at the Jingshan School in Beijing.

I do like the idea of making Learning Chinese more interesting, and Harry Potter is extremely popular. It will be interesting to see how the new book does. The translations of Harry Potter in Chinese are well done.

I am surprised, since the Chinese government is very rationalistic, and discourages the supernatural in media.
Key Points:

I did not realize the Hollywood studios only get 50% of what they usually get in the US. In the US they get 50% of the gross. Theaters in the US make their money from concessions.

China's Box Office in 2017 should be larger than the US Box Office.

Disney had 4 of the 5 highest grossing films for 2016.

Disney has 31% domestic market share.

Five films were responsible for 25% of domestic sales.

Increasing ticket prices have disguised falling theater attendance.

New Covers for Chinese Made Easy for Kids

Quick Thoughts - I am not a Graphic Artist, but after spending a few days adding the new, 2nd edition of Chinese Made Easy for Kids, I have become very familiar with the covers after spending a bit of time with them, including watermarking. And design is an interest of mine.

Pastels are in!

Workbooks have Grey Covers? I guess...

Textbooks and workbooks share the same graphics, just different colors.

Cartoon images

Traditional they just went with blue.

In the previous edition, multiple cartoon characters were used. In the new edition they use one cartoon character per cover, which are actually from the previous edition. This focused my attention a lot more on the cartoon image, previously I did not notice them much.

The previous edition used a colored side bar. My guess this was the style of the time. Now the cover is all white.

Chinese Made Easy for Kids Update

I just finished scanning and uploading images for the front, back, and table for Contents for Chinese Made Easy for Kids.

And did some serious updates to the text for the most popular book, for Level 1, Textbook, Simplified Chinese Made Easy for Kids.

For the other versions, I went through and changed CD to MP3, since the CD is no longer included.

I also updated the buying guide.

As well as noting on the first edition products, that a new edition is available and limited stock on the older edition.

Some schools still want the old edition, since they don't want to change out all their books. I totally understand. A new edition is a headache.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03593968613831527519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7315029490266806661.post-24160966359661961592016-07-24T16:34:00.002-07:002016-07-24T16:34:31.589-07:00Chinese Made Easy for Kids 2nd Edition
My guess another Coyote Victim. May be a dog napping.
No Ghostbusters in China?

Question is why?

The articles guess is because China's ideology is very science focused, a hold over of the Communist Party's Marxist Ideology. The studio did try, even removing the term ghost from the title. Pirates of the Caribbean; Dead Man's Chest in 2006 was also not approved. Or could it be because it's seen as a poor performer?
Coyotes of Rowland Heights

On my way to work, I took these pictures. In the past week, I have had 4 Coyote encounters. 3 of them within a block of my house, and 1 of them next to an elementary school. Only one of the Coyote encounters was at night. The most recent one was of two coyotes. See pictures below.

I also saw 4 missing dog flyers. They varied from a Poodle, to a chocolate lab, to a Golden Retriever. I"ll post them after I remove the phone numbers.

Last year a lady with her husband first put up flyers, and then went door to door asking about her small dog. I felt very sad for her.

I called Animal Control, and per the lady who answered the phone they don't do trapping anymore. I then called my supervisors office, who got a call back for me that was a lot more helpful. It seems there is one trapper for all of LA County, and they only trap coyotes that are high priority. He was very nice and sent me some brochures on what can be done.He mentioned they even have Coyotes in Compton. My guess, if their are attacks on people, things will change quickly. This time of year Coyotes give birth, so they have extra mouths to feed. Plus the drought. And cities offer food and water (pools).

The undertone I got from speaking with the person, is they are very afraid a coyote caught in their trap will get on the nightly news as be used a cause celebre by animal rights.

When I googled Rowland Heights Coyotes, I read there was an attack last year in Hacienda Heights. And that Coyotes can jump over 8 ft fences. The Coyote attack killed a dog, injured another while the owner, a Mother and her daughter were in their back year. They set up a go fund me page for the $2,000 of vet bills. Vets, like Doctors, are not cheap.

A facebook page I found from Fullerton, called Coyote Watch and their blog.

Our cat, that adopted us about 2 years ago, was last seen a week ago. My guess is a Coyote got her. The advice I got was don't let our dog or cat out at night. She was a mix of outdoor /indoor cat, so we let her out whenever she wanted to go. We were very lucky to have her as part of our family.
Ask Ray My guess is the immersion nursery is run by somebody from China, that automatically said Traditional Characters are Cantonese.

Original Question:

hi there

Some time ago I bought a number of CDs from your online shop and had them shipped to me in London, UK.

I
have since been told by my daughter's Mandarin immersion nursery that
the pictures I have shown them of the CDs show Cantonese language
writing.

I have not had a chance to lend them the CD yet, but that is my next stop.

For these two CDs at least, ALL the writing is in Cantonese not Mandarin:

http://www.childbook.com/40-Chinese-Songs-CD-and-Book-1-Hardcover-p/cda225.htm
http://www.childbook.com/Chinese-Children-Songs-12-CD-s-2-Mandarin-p/cd2022.htm

I
have not had a chance to take pictures of the other CDs that I
purchased yet, neither have I had a chance to play the CDs to the fluent
Mandarin speakers.

However, I am already a bit shocked. Are you absolutely sure these are Mandarin?

Regards

K

My response:

Dear K,

Short answer is the books use Traditional Chinese Characters with Mandarin Chinese on the CD's and were published in Taiwan.

Longer answer is there are basically two styles of writing in Chinese. Traditional Characters and Simplified Characters.

Hong Kong, where Cantonese is spoken uses Traditional Characters officially. And that is what is mostly taught in the schools.

Taiwan, where Mandarin Chinese is the official language uses Traditional Characters.

China
where the official language, but a lot of dialects are spoken, uses
Simplified Characters since the revolution in 1949, and the use of
Traditional Characters was outlawed in China.

Simplified
Characters are the same as Traditional (if you know one, you can read
the other), where some strokes on some characters were removed.

The difference between usage of Traditional Characters in Taiwan and in Hong Kong, are more of a grammar issue.

On
which is easier to learn, you have people who argue one or the other is
easier. The claims are one has less strokes and the other has a system.
My opinion is they are both equally hard and the simplification did not
go far enough.

The books with CD's I sold you are in Mandarin, and
published in Taiwan with Traditional Characters along with Bo Po Mo,
which is a traditional type of phonics used in Taiwan. China uses Pinyin
for phonics, that is based on Russian pronunciation. There are also claims on which type of phonics is easier to learn from.

Sincerely,

Difficult to distinguish sincere social justice activism from parody.

Basically UC Davis has a block party, and part of it was a fat suit opportunity.

My thought was intent is a large portion of how something should be judged as racist or not.

I remember that Sumo is now dominated by non Japanese now at the top levels.

Wow - A Chinese company is going to buy Ingram Micro! Total deals announced this year are $81 Billion dollars. The previous period was $11 Billion. Ingram Micro is part of Ingram Industries, which includes Ingram Content Group. I wonder if this would be part of the deal? Ingram is the largest book distributor in the US, but Amazon has taken away a lot of their business.

Some questions:

So what has changed? Why are Chinese companies buying more businesses outside of China?

Why is the Chinese government supporting this?

Can Chinese companies successfully manage a non-Chinese workforce? In the US, the Japanese bought a lot of US companies and often this was a failure. Culture is a huge issue when doing a successful acquisition. Cisco is one of the few companies I know that has been successful in acquisitions.

I wonder, if the percentage of people actually working in Stem varies depending on the college?

Or is it mid-tier have as good, or actually better Stem programs?

Disclaimer - I am a graduate of Cal Poly, Pomona, which is a huge source of Engineering graduates, but in most measurements would be a mid-tier at best college overall. In Engineering, it's one of the top ones.
