I understand her husband's feeling:
"It's even worse that I understand about 15 percent of the conversation, because it's just enough to be tantalizing and not enough to get what's going on."

My wonderful family has this habit of changing to Taiwanese, which I don't understand. In Mandarin, I understand and can speak enough to get laughed at. Chinese are so picky about pronunciation!
