In China, Knockoff Cellphones Are a Hit - NY Times.
Some place I read that the knock offs sometimes arrive quicker to market than the real ones. Because of this, Samsung started releasing their newest models in China. A reason for not going legit is the knockoff manufacturers make more money.Amazing!
Just think about what this says about China once ones gets past the copying aspect...
1. Very technical. Developing the software for a phone is not a small project.
2. Quick design.
3. Quick manufacturing.

I've been to Sanya, China and my brother in law bought knock off iphone and ipod :) it's still working after a year but the features are of course not the same as the original. :)
IMHO, knock offs are sometimes passable if you do not have budget for the real one.
