Why Learn Chinese - Job Security

I had breakfast with a supplier this morning and she mentioned another reason on why to Learn Chinese. Her husband works in the Financial Industry and speaks Chinese, and because of this has kept his job while other people around him have not.

Only negative is now my wife may be expecting me to improve my Chinese beyond the good enough to be laughed at by native Chinese speakers :-)

I totally agree. My 25 year old niece will start this fall on her MBA/JD program. My comment was, "everyone has an MBA!" I suggested that she should take a year off to learn Mandarin and that would make her stand out far better than getting an advanced degree. Did she take my advice---nope. Oh well, in 2 yrs, the nation will have another unemployed MBA graduate.

Ooh, MBA. I have one and I have mixed feelings on it. $70K later and 10 years ago the career services at my school to politely put it needed some work. I was lucky another alumni helped me get a job - thanks Roger, I still owe you!

Two ways on the MBA. Either go to a top, top university or go to a good cheap one (state one). In between costs the same as the top ranked, and does not bring in a much.

And just be aware of what is going to be necessary to get a job when you graduate. What skills will you need? Who is your target companies? How can you start your targeting of them now? Who at your school can help you? What classes and who can help you with these target companies? How can you impress them?

I have a friend of mine that is currently tutoring, since she can't find a full time position. Brilliant lady that had a Master's from Harvard and an MBA from my school.
