China experiments with High Voltage Lines (DC)

This is major and the US should be doing this also. From the WSJ - China Tests High-Tech Power System.

The article does a poor job of explaining what China is actually doing. My guess is they are testing a high voltage DC Transmission lines, the advantages of DC over AC is lower loss, smaller cables, ability to be used in water and in the ground, and ability for long distance transmission of power. Actually DC transmission lines are also being used in Europe, not just Japan and Russian. More on my other blog on Transmission. I did not expect to see this in China, Al Gore has suggested it as part of a smart grid in the US and T. Boone Pickens has been pushing it.

DC Power Transmission lines are poorly understood and the technology that now makes it more efficient is relatively new.
