China's Student Quake Deaths Spark Anger at School Construction - Good article. The Long Beach Earthquake in the 1930's in the US resulted in improvements to school building codes. Where now everything for school buildings in California needs to be approved by a central agency.

The article notes how China's one child policy has increased the grief of the parents of the dead students. NPR has a sad segment on parents excavating an apartment and finding their dead grandparents and child in the ruin.
