China Releases Official Toll of Students in Sichuan Quake ... -NY Times. It's not surprising there is some disagreement over the original number. What I find sad is how China is suppressing coverage of the earthquake and downplaying it as much as possible, because of the fear this will show the corruption that led to the sub standard school buildings that caused so many deaths.

The Long Beach Earthquake in the 1930's in California led to a huge improvement in the safety of schools. And discussion and finger pointing was very open at the time, why can't China be like that 75 years later?
