Lucky Numbers & Real Estate

What was not mentioned was the people who bought the houses with those numberrs, also bought them at a lower price...

Arcadia to reconsider address change requests again in light of superstition - SG Tribune

4's in Mandarin Chinese and Japanese sound like the word death in each language. 8's are lucky, since they have the sound of wealth.

If you noticed, the phone number for childbook has a few 8's in it. 2's and 6's are also considered good.

And yes, I was a bit picky on the Telephone Numbers for my business:

626-810-2088
800-689-1218

4's Chinese Unlucky Symbol

I pulled into a parking space outside my office, and my car's odometer read 444.4 for the last four digits. I am not Chinese, but I figured better to be safe than sorry, so I drove one time around hte building and it became 444.5

4 in Mandarin Chinese (and Japanese) has the same sound as death, so you try to avoid phone numbers for example that are full of the number 4. 8's are considered in Chinese lucky, so you might notice ChildBook's phone number has a few 8's in it, 909-595-8885. My old home number was really cool, especially when the area code was 818. 818-810-3688, but then the area code changed to 626, and then we moved a couple of blocks which was now in the 909 area code and I did not have figured out how I could have kept the number, so goodbye really lucky Chinese Phone Number. When we lived in an apartment a long time ago, after we moved I found a local car dealer had gotten the phone number, since it had lots of 8's in it.

Saving The South China Tiger

The LA Times has an article about an effort to save the South China Tiger, Fighting for Chinese tigers, and the last word by a Wharton Alumni, Li Quan. who has founded a foundation, Save China`s Tigers. The pictures are great in the LA Times article. Basically tigers have been taken to South Africa for a captive breeding program. The trade in tiger body parts for medicine was not mentioned.

Tigers in China are the kings of the animal kingdom. They are seen as a symbol of wealth and vigor. Chinese medicine has used tiger parts because of the belief they promote vigor, which has led to many tigers being killed so their body can be used in medicines. Fortunately, viagra has been shown to be more effective for the vigor issue than medicines made from tigers. There is a proposal for China Tiger Farms for Sell Animal Parts to Aid Conservation.

Symbology of Chinese Colors

Everyone knows that Red in Chinese is a good luck color. Colors of China by Shannon Zemlicka is a nice book that shows this. In European Color Symbology, the color red as symbolized in Red Riding Hood has a slightly different meaning. My wife put together a nice listing of the Symbolic meanings by Chinese of Colors by EliteDresses.com

But what do other colors symbolize in Chinese?
  • Purple symbolizes wealth and winter.
  • Blue is a boys and of immortality.
  • Yellow is a royal color.
  • Red is of good luck and power since it's the color of Fire.
  • White is the end, color of mourning.
