Taiwanese Movie

  •  Warriors of the Rainbow is playing locally in LA. If I remember correctly, very bloody. The protagonist were headhunters. Its about a rebellion against the Japanese who ruled Taiwan for about 50 years.

  • Bo Xilai’s Soap Opera Continues

Over 1200 comments, and many of them seem to be from Mainland Chinese going over the firewall!

What this means is there is a of anger over corruption and favoritism by Chinese.

And per a Wall Street Journal article, he got 3 tickets in Massachusetts while driving a Black Porsche Panamera ($80,000 or more).

Strange with all kinds of reports looking for sensational news, etc. However, it's a total different story as in "Murder in Coweta County" court scene!

Film Industry - Who is taking advantage of who?

This is going to be interesting...
    1. The US film industry, Hollywood, has a long and proud tradition of taking money from outside investors. This has included the Japanese, Germans, French, and even GE. Keywords in this were synergy. The Movie industry is masters at creative accounting, also known as Hollywood Accounting (translation - net profits are known as monkey points for a reason).
    2. China is seen as growing market for movies.
    3. China has restrictions on the amount of US movies that can be show in China. Used to be 25, its been increased, but more of them need to be 3D.
    4. China's government sees the US movie industry as a huge reason for the spread of US culture world wide.
    5. China's government wants to push the Chinese culture worldwide - Confucius Institutes is an example of this.
    6. China's government would like their movie industry to be as successful as Hollywood.
    7. China's government does practice censorship of movies made in China, and influences what is produced by any Hollywood studio that does business in China.

Another great blog post by Walter Mead on China's claims in the South China Sea. Basically a lot of local competing agencies in China have their own agendas, which are not matching the agency that should be in charge (foreign ministry). Translation - there is a lot of danger of escalation as China's agencies are playing chicken for their own goals.

    US and China Showdown?

Great article which is a must read for understanding the politics of the US China relationship.

The end result is China is feeling encircled and picked on by the US and surrounding coutries, which is a bit dangerous. And then the blind activist, Chen Guangcheng, is holed up in the US embassy. And of course, the Bo Xilai soap opera is still ongoing.

    Smuggling iPhones into China

I am surprised about the article. I have been reading that the premium for smuggled iPhones into China is very small now, making smuggling not as economical. The result has been a bunch of returns in the US to Apple stores.

    Easy Zongzi Recipe

The Dragon Boat Festival is fast approaching and what a great opportunity to eat Zongzi or Chinese Rice Dumpling. Some here in the US, especially here in California call it Chinese Tamales because it is similar to the Mesoamerican Tamale.

    Procedure:

    1.   Cut meat into small cubes (you can use a meat grinder to make it easier or you can ask your local butcher to cut or ground your meat for you), then add the peanuts, Chinese Soy Sauce, salt, brown sugar and five spice powder and mix it together in a large mixing bowl and set it aside for an hour.

    2.   Wash and drain the soaked glutinous rice.

    3.   Soak the dried bamboo in warm water. Take two leaves with leaf stem or spine facing out. Overlap them lengthwise in opposite directions. With both hands hold leaves a little over a half of the way along their length. At that point bend them so that they are parallel lengthwise and also overlap each other. This should produce a leaf pouch. Hold firmly with one hand. Add about half way with glutinous rice then a two cubes of pork (or about 1 ½ tsp. of ground pork mix), don’t forget to add some peanuts. Then fill it up with more glutinous rice. Compress it with a spoon. Then overlap the leaves and tie with butcher’s twine or strong cotton string.

    4.   Place dumplings in pot filled with water and boil for 2-3 hours. Be sure to check the water levels as to not burn the dumplings. After boiling, place in cold water for about an hour. You may serve hot or cold.

    Wire Tapping in China

I knew there was wire tapping in China, but I am surprised it was to this extent.  This is definitely very 1984'ish. The twist being top officials tapping each other. What I am surprised at is many top officials would rely on written or in person communication for items they did not want to get out.

The lack of trust in any electronic communication upon reflection make sense, but I find it troubling.

    US and China Car Preferences

    Interesting:

Chinese consumers crazy about SUVs - LA Times

Another difference is the use of a driver, which means the back seat needs to be larger than in a US Car. The difference is in what conveys status in the US, compared to China.

Learning About The Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Races are very noisy and exciting events with hundreds of teams competing against each other. Chinese Dragon Boats are long, narrow boats with a dragon's head at one end and a tail at the rear. A leader sits in the front by the head, facing the rowers, and sets the pace by pounding a large drum with the teams of rowers paddling together in as one as they race to the finish line. The Chinese Dragon Boat Festival takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month that should be around June in our calendar.

But why does the festival focus on dragons and not other any animal? There are many legends about its origin. One legend tells the story of Qu Yuan, an old man that drowns himself by jumping from a boat because he couldn’t stand to see his country being destroyed by incapable leaders. When the village people went to look for him, it was too late, and so they threw offerings of rice into the water to calm the man’s spirit. One day, Qu Yuan’s spirit returned and told them that a river dragon was devouring the race meant for him. He asked that they wrap the rice in leaves, in shapes like small pyramids. Today, people eat these rice dumplings, known as zongzi in memory of the old man.
