'Ghostbusters' Denied Release in China

No Ghostbusters in China?

Question is why?

The articles guess is because China's ideology is very science focused, a hold over of the Communist Party's Marxist Ideology. The studio did try, even removing the term ghost from the title. Pirates of the Caribbean; Dead Man's Chest in 2006 was also not approved. Or could it be because it's seen as a poor performer?

Waldorf Hotel may be Sold to Chinese Investors

US eyes sale of NY's Waldorf hotel to Chinese firm - AP

What is disturbing, is the deal is being looked at by the US government for security risks. There is a fear of Chinese using it to spy, since the President, many US diplomats, and the US ambassador uses the hotel during General Assembly meetings.

China E-Commerce Opportunities

Good read, the part I would be very careful about is the local partner. I have seen so many stories of messy divorces with local partners.

Macy's in China?

My advice would be start small, and see what works, and does not work. With joint ventures, be very very careful. From what I read the huge headaches for e-commerce operations in China is logistics and payment.

Battle heats up among Chinatown bubble tea shops

Typical - where one shop can do OK, then more open since the first is doing great. And then everyone suffers usually. I have seen this a couple of times. A family friend's Taiwanese restaurant had a competitor open next door to them, so they got into a pricing war. The family friend was furious that the property management company would allow a competitor next door. The end result was the other company finally closed, and my friend then sold their restaurant and the new owners had to close it. And the spot is still empty at that mall, so the property management company also lost.

Sometimes, it can actually be good to have a cluster of businesses in an area and it actually helps everyone. An example of that is all the Chinese wedding photography studios in Temple City.

Conflict of Interests in China Shipping

Eye opening article. Basically a Brazilian mine owner to make their ore more competitive, had made some super huge vessels at a cost of $2 Billion Dollars. Unfortunately, the company did not realize how politically connected the current ore carriers are (dominated by a Chinese state owned company).

Home Depot will emphasize the web in China

My guess htis is a bit of face saving...

Home Depot will emphasize the web in China - Internet Retailer

My 2 cents is Home Depot should do a lot of experimentation to figure out what works in China for the home improvement market. I am not sure they are actually doing that.

Start Up Helps Companies do Business with Chinese

The example in the article seems to be for a US company selling US properties targeting Chinese? It's not clear. Sounds like a good niche, but there are a couple of other companies already doing this.

$5 Billion Potential US investment in US

The politics are interesting, but what is more interesting the $ amounts involved. It would double the current amount of Chinese investment in the US. $4.7 Billion was invested by China last year, and the solar generating plant would be about $5 Billion.

Strange Business Case

I wish the article had more proof/details.

The quotes are eye opening, and I have heard of similar demands:

At the crux of Ng's case has been a crude power play for control of the lucrative travel company, GZL, which has offered a sobering insight into the influence of state-owned enterprises and the murkier aspects of China's judicial system.

Matthew Perrin's cautionary Chinese tale: Maley

Matthew Perrin's cautionary Chinese tale: Maley - Smart Company

Wow, the former owner of Billabong declared bankruptcy after investing in China.

I wish there was more details in the article.  Basically Mr. Perrin seemed to have no understanding of how business really works in China, and lost everything because of it. This is telling:

On one occasion, Global Mart finally completed the purchase of a supermarket chain, only to discover that the vendor had secretly sold the business to another consortium.

Auditor Problems in China

Classic.  A fake web site for a bank was set up for the auditors for reviewing cash levels!

Somehow the auditor caught on to this.

Another example seems to be where a bank employee was bribed, to tell the auditor what they wanted to hear.
