Chinese use of Nanny's in the US

Many ethnic Chinese use Nanny's in the US. There is a supply of recent Chinese immigrants in the US, legal and not, who are willing to be live in Nannies. The rate varies depending on the experience, and where the person is from. A person from Taiwan with the same qualifications, usually charges more than a person from China. The duties include cooking, cleaning, and childcare. Some Nannies for older children, also include dropping and picking up from school the children.

This recent saga, shows some of the potential issues of having an unknown person as a Nanny, live in your house.

There is a lot of rules for hiring a Nanny proper in the US, as Zoë Baird found out with the Nannygate scandal.

Bullying Impacts

I am surprised that bullying could have an impact even 40 years later. Article is so so, and basically notes there is a problem.

Childhood bullying can lead to suicide even 40 years later: Devastating effects can last well into middle age, researchers find - Daily Mail

My guess:

Bullying has caused a type of PTSD. PTSD is where the mind is focused on something negative.

One way is when your body is in a constant state of fight or flight. When you were in danger of being eaten by a saber tooth tiger, your body shuts down everything, except what is necessary to get away. This includes the ability to control your emotion, reproductive, and digestive systems. On the Savannah, this only lasted a couple of minutes. Now, people are living in a long term stressful environment. And when your in combat, you get trained to be in a constant state of arousal.

The real question is how do you solve the challenge of PTSD? How do you retrain the mind so your mind is not always in a state of heightened awareness? How do you make it so a mind can handle more stress? How do you make it so a person has more emotional resilience?

Deprogramming China's Internet Addicts

Reminds me of what I have read about some Wilderness therapy camps in the US. That use a tough love approach with kids.

Regular Bedtimes Helps Improve Student Scores

Having a set routine helps in building a habit. When I was subbing, I saw so many kids of all ages, who were so tired in class, because they had not gotten a good nights sleep the night before. Kids need sleep. Being sleep deprived I read is similar to being drunk. Think how good a student you are if you were drunk? And by having a set bed time, it helps for making it consistent. I know students who do all nighters to cram at the last minute, but to actually learn the material for the longer term, it does not help. You may pass the test, but if you ever need to use it again, you will need to re-learn it.

  • Irregular bedtimes can affect learning potential for life, scientists found
  • Sleep gives very young children's brains a chance to process and learn
