Children liable for calling ex-Catholic school teacher a 'perv' and 'creeper'
For Teachers, I feel this is good change. As a parent, it could be a negative. From reading what the teacher did, I disagree with his actions. As a male teacher, it's very important to never, never put yourself in a position where you can be accused of anything.
Children liable for calling ex-Catholic school teacher a 'perv' and 'creeper' - Mail Online
When I was a teacher, a story I heard 3rd hand about a male teacher who was accused by some girls of something, and the reason that came out was the girls were upset with him over a grade. It finally came out later, but by then the teacher's career had been ruined.Labels: Best Schools, best students, teaching chinese
Hints of in the Future Better Way to Learn Chinese Characters
The study showed that by teaching a system for Chinese Characters, it helped on learning them. The typical Chinese textbook teaches Chinese characters based on the characters popularity. What was missing from the article is which is better for learning from a system, Traditional or Simplified Chinese Characters. Feedback I have heard is Traditional Characters have more of a System to the strokes, where some of that was lost in Simplified Chinese - this was per a Chinese teacher who hates Simplified Characters. Of course the counter argument is Simplified has less strokes, therefore it's easier to learn.

Unsure robots make better teachers than know-alls
I believe there is also a lesson for teachers here, the goal is to get the student engaged, and by being interactive this is huge. Getting students to partipicate actively is a huge goal, and also to use the material by teaching it can help in actually learning the material.

Siri and Learning Chinese
If Siri releases an API for Siri this could revolutionize language instruction. Siri is the voice command ability for the iPhone 4S. How Siri is different is it gives a natural language understanding.
What I see is instead of the traditional textbook, all of a sudden you could have a voice interactive teaching of a foreign language. I see this as a game change for foreign language instruction.

Shorter break doesn’t mean more learning
Does a shorter summer break mean more learning in school?
On one side in the US you have the no home work crowd. A new movie is pushing this view point Race to Nowhere
And on the other side you have the our school year is too short in the US.
A good article that is a good read - Shorter break doesn’t mean more learning- The Jerusalem Post
My view is a mixture of both. HW is helpful, but good teaching is also needed. As well as less time spent on discipline in the classroom. I would like to know more about why teaching is so effective in Finland. Labels: teaching chinese
Why being a Teacher can be scary
Fairfax teacher found not guilty of molesting girl - Washington Post
The comments are worth a read.
I sent my daughter a Christian School for Kindergarten, and one of the major reasons was the teachers were willing to give hugs to kids. It was a very loving environment and as a parent I appreciated that.
At public schools I was very uncomfortable when I was subbing when a little kid gave me a hug, asked me to tie their shoe laces, or adjust their pants (I had the Principal do this one - it was a strange pants/shorts combination). I was also very careful never to be in a classroom with only one student (if I got there early, the class room door stayed close). Yes, I was a bit paranoid, but it only takes one complaint, even if an innocent mis-understanding, to ruin your life.
From the comments:
What some people need to realize is that some kids in school, when they get a pat on the back or a hug from a teacher, have just received the one and only show of affection and positive reinforcement they'll get all day, because they won't get it at home. How terribly sad that we, as educators, can't do the things necessary to help children learn, and make them proud and happy while they're doing it. I can't even count the number of times students have run over to me and given me a big hug. I consider it a privilege to be a positive influence in their lives. It's a real shame that there are people out there who will give it a completely different interpretation, whether it be a student or an overzealous parent. I'm glad I'm close to retirement, and I hope I don't get hauled off to court for trying to help a needy student know that someone cares
Another sad story where the Teacher committed suicide after being accused. What is worse is he was found innocent, but had not been told by the school in time.
His reputation sullied, teacher commits suicide False accusation leads to tragedy in Virginia city - Washington Post
The problem is with this type of accusation, once your accused your basically thought to be guilty, until your proven innocent. And with the Internet it spreads so quickly. And to fight it takes money, time, and has a huge emotional impact on your family.

Even Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland Celebrates Moon Festival
This one is nice...
Kids love animals and teaching them something about Chinese culture while looking at animals is better!
Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland is giving 10 free classes for Moon Festival. Kids can come to the zoo for a lesson about animals from China and Scotland. After that there are some activities about the Moon Festival. Follow-up resource packs will be provided.
Only one class per school can be accommodated, but it's still a neat and generous offer.

For teachers in the US, this is a neat idea and can be patterned as a lesson plan for future use. What do you think? Labels: Chinese moon festival, teaching chinese
Robot Teaching?
For those times where severe patience is needed, I can see where having a robot do repetitive work would be a win for the teachers and students. The example of working with a special ed student is a good one. The challenge is for a great teacher, Teaching is an art, where you need to vary your style depending on the students. Sometimes you slow down, sometimes you speed up, and sometimes you just need to go to plan B, C, D, etc. till you find something that works. Korea is actualy deploying hundreds of robots in classrooms as teascher aides and classroom playmates. Students, Meet Your New Teacher, Mr. Robot - NY Times Labels: teaching chinese
Culture Clash - Teaching Chinese
Guest-Teaching Chinese, and Learning America - NY Times. Amazing... - Hong Kong is the capital of China?
- Chinese actually use cell phones...
Actually when I was a substitute teacher it was amazing what some students knew, and did not know. Sometimes you wondered if they were pulling your leg. And there can be a huge culture clash. I remember one class where the majority of the class was flunking. The teacher, first year Math Teacher from Taiwan or China, had given up on the class. And the classes has given up on her. It was one of my most challenging classes I ever subbed and I learned a lot from it. Labels: teaching chinese
Virtual Classrooms - Are they the future?
An article from the NY Times that is a good read - Virtual Classrooms Could Create a Marketplace for KnowledgeMany top universities are taping lectures and putting them online for free. MIT has a series on physics for example, that I have heard very good things from. My opinion is for the right person these are a great resource! For those that can self study and have the discipline to do so. Taking a class forces you to attend it and a great teacher can help in motivating you to do more. Of course when you are in a huge lecture hall of several hundred students, the online experience may be superior. I have not seen taped lectures being used as part of a regular class. Even by teachers as a way to supplement material in their classes. The part that is missing from watching a video is the interaction a student can have with a teacher. The asking of questions and how the teacher can pace/customize their teaching to the class. Different classes and even times of day can require a slightly different teaching style. Early in the morning (are your students awake), to after lunch (bit lethargic), to the class before school ends (how many minutes left? I wonder if anyone is going to put on the web an entire series of Learning Chinese video's for teaching Chinese as many top colleges are doing for other classes? Since a textbook is needed for a Chinese class, there would also need to be associated content. Be it an eBook or something. Labels: Education Improvements, teaching chinese
